LIGHTS

In line with the theme “Sharing our Stories”, this project aims to highlight members’ personal journey with genealogy through a short documentary and online campaign. With roughly 5 interviews the information will be arranged in a 30 minute documentary, 3 minute shortened reel, and 1 minute soundbites (from each interview). Intended to reflect the wide range of individuals who are drawn to genealogy - the questions will aim to reflect the nuances of finding one’s own history.

Aim of project –

  • To connect members to one another through resolve found in research practices.

  • To circulate information on the practice of genealogy

  • To reflect on the built community of Tallahassee African American Genealogical Society (TAAGS)

Full Documentary will be available to members only on the website while short form reels will be shared to Facebook and Instagram.

Interview Expectation –

Interviewees will have the opportunity to:

  • Have flexibility in whether they want audio or visual interviews conducted

  • Bring in personal heirlooms or family charts

  • Sign off an release form for full details

  • Read transcripts at the end of the interview to redact any sensitive information

  • Opt-out of inclusion in promotions at any time

Angela Bruton reflects on her genealogical research at the Wakulla Historical Society, where a 1972 Magnolia Monthly article titled "Uncle Neal of Shadeville" shed light on her family history. The research clarified family mysteries, such as naming conventions and relationships, and resonated with themes from Zora Neale Hurston’s work.
