Books like Me

“Every child deserves to see themselves as the hero.”

Core Mission

Increase literacy and joy in reading among African
American children in Tallahassee’s book desert neighborhoods by providing free, high-quality
books featuring Black protagonists to children in Grades K-5.

TAAGS Vision

To preserve and uplift the histories of African American families—whether their
stories begin in Tallahassee, the Big Bend, or anywhere our ancestors lived, worked, or
dreamed.

TAAGS Mission

To guide and support individuals and families in uncovering their African American ancestry through culturally informed research, community education, and healing through the power of truth and remembrance.

Books Like Me is a natural extension of TAAGS's vision and mission. By promoting literacy, representation, and cultural pride among African American children, the program helps lay a foundation for future genealogists, strengthens family engagement, and supports community healing. As part of TAAGS, Books Like Me contributes to a unified, culturally grounded strategy to uplift African American families through story, history, and truth.

"In all of us there is a hunger, marrow deep, to know our heritage, to know who we are and where we came from." - Alex Haley
